<hats I'm wearing: writing program director, academic-integrity researcher> False positives happen, but that's because a lot of profs don't know how to interpret findings. The checkers merely tell the prof where they find overlap w/ other texts. The prof then decides what the overlap *means*.

A case in point: Once an instructor I oversaw charged a student with plagiarism. It turned out the instructor had also had that student upload her *rough draft* through Turnitin a week earlier.
