A subtle thing I appreciate about the 'Star Trek' universe is the frequency with which its futuristic cities feature … walkable or even pedestrianized streets, plentiful shade, and mid-rise neighborhoods of gentle density. Actual cities, in other words.

The basic problem with the US and idyllic cities is that we would need 2-5 billion people to have European density where those idyllic cities exist, at least the fraction of the densely populated European cities that are idyllic.
