That being said, I don't disbelieve that asking "who will defend democracy better?" results in more people choosing Trump. That feeds into the general association of Rs as warlike, pugnacious fighters. A more honest question would be "who will fight R efforts to stop non-white people from voting?"

I think there are people who truly believe that preventing non-white people from voting IS Democracy, therefore, the best way to “protect” it.

This is a problem with Biden's campaign, too. Don't just talk about "defending democracy." That's too vague. Talk about "stop these Nazis from murdering you."
