Back when Return of the King was released they showed the Fellowship and Two Towers extended editions back to back before the midnight release of the theatrical cut of RotK. There were breaks between the movies at least. It was a hell of a marathon, but it was amazing.

Ah fascinating! I watched all three EEs in one day when ROTK came out. I couldn't do that today (took 12 hours) but it was quite the experience!
