It's wild to me that people are casually accepting of this while on the same weekend there was a mass shooting at a nightclub on the other side of the city, killing 2 and injuring 4.

If I was at that con and saw that, I would legit scream "GUN" and react as if I thought it was real. I wouldn't just report it to staff, I'd call 911, I don't care what anyone says. It doesn't belong at a furry convention.
