Virtually every piece of modern comics/animation can be traced back to the Takarazuka Revue, a Japanese all-women theater that - while not explicitly queer - absolutely is part of queer culture. "God of Manga" Osamu Tezuka based his characters on the way performers stylized their make-up.

You know that company "Toho"? The ones that made Godzilla? Yeah, that's the abreviated name for "Tokyo-Takarazuka Theater Company, for managing the Takarazuka Revue and other entertainment holdings. So Godzilla also goes back to this magnificent gender performance theater.
