At the very least, history is not kind to unelected leaders who thumb their nose at the citizenry. Treating laws and norms as simply words on paper erodes all authority, even their own.

I've been trying that out in varous conversation threads by pointing out that if the laws don't apply to 'some' people, the rest of us can decide they also just don't matter. Basic crowd psychology: if one person is obviously breaking the rules no consequence, many, then all, join in.
