Ever wondered about the multicoloured sheen in insects? They all use chitin for their armour. This is a colourless stuff but because of super-small structures, it can play with light and you can sometimes see the colour change at every viewing angle (iridescence).

There is an interesting Wikipedia article on structural coloration, so colours produced by nano structures.

It explains why peacock feathers are actually brown and still can take all colours of the rainbow.
