This one is a bit of a hot-take about minority language rights in SFF that I sort of know some folks might strongly disagree with or even take umbrage.

But we're generally interested in other perspectives and arguments on this matter.

I like this take, and it fleshes out my theory that Han Solo may be something of a linguistic genius; he has conversations with Rodian, Huttese, and Wookiee speakers. It's a nice (if probably unintentional) counterpoint to Galactic Standard/fascism that the independent rogue is a polyglot.

Underrated TNG episode for language is S3E2, "The Ensigns of Command". The Federation straight-up failed to learn the language of the Sheliac. They speak English but consider it a contemptible language. In print SF, shout-outs to Babel-17 by Delany and Embassytown by MiƩville.

Deep Wheel Orcadia is such a good book - I wish more people had discussed it when it came out. I only read it because it was on the Clarke Award shortlist (just in time to be glad it won), and it was so beautiful and thoughtful.
