So hey, here's a thing I don't think a lot of folks know: That whole "Patient Zero" thing? The French-Canadian airhost who supposedly spread HIV all over America?
That's not real. That's not what happened or how it happened.
We recently lost a dear family member to suicide. He was of that elder generation and had “survived” with HIV/AIDS all these years. It was a life of sadness and sickness and pain. Rest in peace to him and to Gaetan and to all of them.
Gaëtan Dugas was a sexually active, gay, French-Canadian airhost. He was diagnosed so early, he participated in a study to prove HIV was sexually transmitted. (Yes, this was WAY back.)
Gaëtan kept an address book (people used to do that), and the researchers used it for contact tracing.
I worked in microbiology at the time and we knew he was not the first patient, and knew he kept logs that convinced researchers it was contagious. Very early I learned that what professionals thought and what politicians said and the public believed were three very different things. Same in 2020.
Thanks for the reminder to go reread And The Band Played On. That and a pair of AIDS documentaries (We Were Here and How To Survive a Plague) became bedrock foundations of my worldview.
Here's a clip featuring Gaetan Dugas himself at a forum on AIDS in Vancouver in 1983. (Keep in mind this was literally days before researchers in France announced that they'd identified the HIV virus.) Even the Director of the CDC was apparently identifying Dugas as "Patient Zero."
Canadian filmmaker John Greyson made a movie musical about this topic and he did it on a tiny budget. It’s really something. www.justwatch.com/us/movie/zer...
Face it, NOBODY knows how ANYTHING happens or who is RESPONSIBLE or WHERE it comes from because every five years or so somebody comes up with the "definitive" answer and the "indisputable" evidence.
We are caught in a web of bullshit that just goes on and on and on.....
