1) He would be seen as weak 2) more importantly, he wanted to give hope to children with polio that it was possible to walk again. In my disability history class we talk about the pros and cons of making this choice!

One the one hand, it gave kids hope and encouraged them to keep doing therapy. On the other hand, it could give kids a feeling of failure. If FDR got better, why can’t I?
