The uneven distribution of political representation in America, leaving aside all the many other spoofs and goofs of our silly system, is really one of those marvels of human belief, like hereditary rule or, I dunno, chiropractic, that truly baffle the mind.

Some of America’s middest wits have convinced themselves that the revulsion provoked by stating the promise outright, “if we weighted every vote equally, then too many of the wrong people would win the day,” is a sign that it’s actually a very sophisticated idea.
