I don't love the "only people I follow can reply" feature. I understand that it stops bad actors from commenting, but does it now also close you off to new potential friends?

It might, but you don’t need to use that setting for every post. I think you can also change who can reply afterwards too if you need to lock it. Sometimes it’s for security, sometimes it’s as simple as the deadline passed for entering a raffle.
