Everyone wanting to write AND draw their own graphic novel needs to look at this, and plan your finances/side-gigs accordingly.
The advance money reeeeally doesn't go as far as you think it does.
It really doesnβt. I just write and the pressure to research, travel, write, and deliver on time while also working other jobs to keep the lights on leads to so much burnout. It honestly got more intense after I had a successful book, to get something out before people forget me.
This seems a bit long in my experience. I mean maybe if youre going entirely by hand and using traditional art and lettering vs digital, but my graphic novel projects usually only ran 3-4 months, when i was freelancing...which means a looooot of vanity projects amd crappy pay
My next project will be one where I just do the art and someone else writes, mainly for this reason. Doing both is FAR too much work for one person, since advances only average $10-30k per book and each book takes 2-3 years to make.
