I mean this with respect, but you’re doing a frankly insane amount of 4D chess to downplay this risk. Normal people see this shuffling of the deck chairs and go, “oh they’re clearly unable to lead” and either switch votes or stay home.

I don't see it as 4D chess. I see it as a situation in which both paths forward are really really ugly: Many Americans believe Biden is cognitively incapable of executing the office, or of campaigning in any sort of effective way, but understand that replacing him would be a huge risk as well.
