It's worth noting that the continued strength and political relevance of a radical left is something of a French exception (Spain also comes to mind). It was always either the junior partner in the center-left coalition or outside it on the fringes. 1/2

After the 2017 Macron realignment splintered the center-left, the far left LFI became the dominant party of first a weakened left and since 2022 a strengthened left. The unease with the LFI/Mélenchon explains the difficulty a weakened center now faces in holding off the far right. 2/2
