I don't get it, I said. There's plenty of work, the roads are well-maintained, the TGV runs on time, life is pretty good. So why is everyone so dissatisfied? She laughed and said, Don't worry, you'll understand eventually. That's just how France is.

I think of that every time I read an article now about the disconnect between popular sentiment in France and the actual state of affairs in the country. But as I've often said about Macron, in politics as in marital disputes, being right is overrated.
