I was going to mention this exact novel, and like, I don't remember the Spanish Flu Pandemic being a part of the conversation about the author's background AT ALL (then again I was in 10th grade 20+ years ago, so who knows).

We talked about it and my teacher gave us all kinds of readings and we were like “hm, yeah, sounds rough, lots of flu, people died, huh.” Just no context for it. We were too young to have even been aware of the AIDS crisis let alone understand an epidemic that happened 80 years before.
