What happens when people with the institutional power to fight evil people don’t fight is those without institutional power despair. You can blame desperate people for the suffering that’s coming their way, if you want, but doing so doesn’t distinguish you from fascists.

There's a whole machinery in place to dissuade people from revolting; the disheartening thing is that it works so well. I'm reminded of Timothy Snyder's first rule in his pamphlet On Tyranny: "Do not obey in advance." I understand why they would, but I really wish they wouldn't.
