The 101 is that, for every hr parents work, they have to pay child care workers. This basically amounts to a pyramid scheme where parents pay huge %s of their wages to child care workers who, w/o public funding, inherently earn even less. Everyone is squeezed, with daycares running on tiny margins.
Question intended to clarify, not criticize: the solution is making all citizens pay a little, instead of working parents of dependent children paying 1:1?
A friend of mine with 3 kids under 5 said the costs amounted to 1 entire salary (if not a little more), so since she had the better health insurance plan, her husband quit his job to be full time care giver. Makes me wonder how many households have to make that same decision
19 years ago I ended up quitting my job and becoming a stay at home parent in part because I would have been clearing about $100 a week after paying for childcare for 2 children. I had a pretty decent job, too.
Don't forget the massive insurance costs! I was a preschool teacher for some years and parents were paying an arm and a leg but we weren't getting paid crap and we had no budget for classroom supplies. Most of the money went to insuring the center.
