When Byron de la Beckwith was tried for shooting and killing Medgar Evers, it was revealed he'd written the National Rifle Association to inform them "we here in Mississippi are going to have to do a lot of shooting to protect our wives and children from bad n----s." (Boston Globe, 2/6/64)
