I have a theory that Roberts had been seeking to moderate the Court during the Trump admin because he knows how his opinion in this case will be remembered by history, and he only recently gave up on this project as a lost cause

"Lies My Teacher Told Me" really opened my eyes to this. We tell ourselves the grand narrative of progress (slavery, then Jim Crow, then freedom, yay!) but in reality there are periods of great progress and retreat. It definitely feels like we're moving backwards now.

Agreed, but that would be unfortunate because it should be 2000 instead. Florida election debacle, the start of frequent minority rule in presidency & Senate, GOP whipping up voter fraud hysteria to reject losses like MO Senate & justify restrictions, Bush politicizing the DOJ to enable them, etc.
