When everyone online would talk up the "housing first" trial that was done in Salt Lake City, it honest to god felt like gaslighting to see praise for a secret program that opened and closed while the police continued trashing encampments and throwing away vulnerable people's worldly possessions
I know things are moving slowly, but the goal is to collect data and use that to help pass legislation. For example, they were studying whether it's more helpful to give people a lump sum up front or a larger payment per month.

I keep trying to tell people that we need to just give people cash with little to no means testing. It’s easier for participants (who may not have the cognition or means to complete complex applications) and it saves on administrative costs because you don’t have to sniff out as much fraud/abuse.
There is this "Christian" belief that some people will waste whatever help is given to them. So "Christians" hate programs where there isn't direct supervision of the recipient's finances

I mean, just remove barriers to Medicare-Medicaid, food stamps/ebt, and the basic disability services for a start. Who cares if someone who isn’t in need is taking an extra $300 in food benefits if it keeps another ten thousand kids fed?
