Just finished Bring Up the Bodies, in which Mantel repeatedly uses the construction "he, Cromwell" (or occasionally "he, [some other name]"), which keeps the close-up narrative perspective while also adding some clarity. I found that stylistic choice a little jarring at first, but came to like it.
