Asked him about it, and apparently it comes down to examining the shape of the tail (which this bird foiled by sitting at an angle). If the bird comes back and you see it straight on, the bottom of the Cooper's tail is supposed to be rounded, while the sharp-shinned hawk's is more squared off.
