I wouldn't call that a power grab. There was a dispute that needed an answer, and it involved laws. The Court made a point of saying Bush v. Gore shouldn't be taken as precedent for anything. One can certainly criticize it, but it wasn't a "we get more power in the future" move like these decisions.
