It's true that Charles I insisted that he was still the boss when Oliver Cromwell defeated him in a Parliamentary vote. It look a whole war (Britain's own Civil War) with thousands dead before the issue was resolved (and Charles was executed). The USA is just behind the times by a few centuries.
