Farm workers are important and deserve rights and protections, and also am I the only city kid who thinks this picture looks like somebody randomly put some watermelons down in a field
Honestly they grow like weeds. When I was 13 my family had a quarter acre paddock that was overrun with them and I had to mow the borders to stop them taking over other paddocks every week
Back when my back wasn’t fucked I used to work on a farm that grew these
It’s even wilder to pick them, and this was before more automation mind you, you cut them of the vine, roll them into the row and then have to throw them to somebody standing in a large bin that was being carried by a tractor
I was a country kid so all I got is that they kinda end up where they end up. It's not like you wanna risk moving them a whole lot and have it come off the...vine? i guess too early.
they just grow like that!
saved a bunch of seeds and i'm gonna scatter them all over the yard, cover them in mulch
little too late for this season but next year i'd like to do a couple three sisters mounds, and melons make a good third sister
My ex-step-sister-in-law was the ED for this city project. One of the deals was community gardens. I did some time with them, and one of the shockers (many) was the kids didn't get that it was all FOOD. That they could just eat and stuff!
Really!
