This was lovely and wrenching — thank you for writing it. I'm sorry he scarred your young life, and glad you salvaged a sense of humor from that relationship. I wonder what is to happen to all the boxes of ashes people keep not because of treasured memories, but out of a sense of obligation.

A lot more than people think, I would wager. All the heirlooms we're "supposed" to keep but have no memories with and no connection to.
