I thought the central joke was humans and how they get preoccupied with nerrow minds focussing on rediculous priorities.

I thought the joke was that the universe was this huge, absurd, ridiculous place where nothing really makes any sense at all, and we're all just kinda bumbling through it, trying to make do in the situations we find ourselves in the best that we can with the little time we have. And the fish helps.
