The idea is that neither party can save this system, because the system is already dead and simply hasn’t realized it yet. In this cynical (but not necessarily wrong) read, *millions and millions are going to die no matter what we do.*

The longer we the people allow the corpse to continue twitching & feigning life, the more people will die *long term.* So the theory is to expedite the final death, so that whatever comes next can come sooner rather than later, because that IS the way to protect the most people. In this perspective.
