When Chinatown opened, people said "They'll be teaching Robert Towne's screenplay 50 years from now." That was 50 years ago. Towne was one of the true legends of New Hollywood (and knew it), wrote some great movies and brought brilliance to many others. What he knew, you can't teach. RIP.
- “Of course I'm respectable. I'm old! Politicians, ugly buildings and whores all get respectable if they last long enough.”
Robert Towne certainly didn’t have to wait until he was old to become respectable. RIP
If there were to be a list of all-time great films set in L.A. that have nothing to do with movies, just as a backdrop/character/plot device, "Chinatown" would be my number one choice. (My number two choice would be "Heat," but that's just me.)
A diplomat friend told me that one of the Qs on the foreign service exam was "what film would you show overseas to explain American culture?" I said, "Chinatown." So I probably would not have passed the exam. Just not diplomat material I guess
