don't know if it used to be a thing with those two papers (they both pay interns now), but elsewhere unpaid internships do a great job at keeping out the wrong type of young staffers

I mean, even if they do pay interns, there’s still a ton of filtering involved with being selected for the job + being able to survive in NYC or DC on relatively paltry intern than junior reporter wages for years.
