Happened to me too. Was asking a professor I then followed on Twitter (he’s here now) how to get hold of a paper he mentioned in a tweet. He sent me not only a link to the paper, but to his books and other papers related to the subject. I was grateful and baffled.

As a former academic, I can confirm! And they’re generally happy to answer any honest questions you have, no matter how basic, because talking about science is the fun part of the job! An e-mail that starts with “I was reading your work and had a question…” will 100% make someone’s day.
