Right? I think a lot of people are used to going on resort holidays where everyone is there to look after you and speaks English, and so going to a city scares them because they have to put some effort in.

I've also heard that New Yorkers are rude, and that's not a language thing. I think that's a failure to understand a cultural norm that everyone's time is valuable, so you decide how you want your bagel BEFORE joining the line, otherwise YOU are being rude to the bagel guy and other customers.
