Until 1974 in the USA women were unable to open a bank account or acquire a line of credit without a man co-signing. The financial services industry was led by (usually white) men. So eight women came together to turn everything around by opening their own Women's Bank.

Because of the Women’s Bank of Los Angeles, I, a member of the Board of Directors of Women In Film in 1977, and every member of Women In Film were able to obtain Credit Cards on our own. No male guardian signatures required. This new economic asset was essential to our financial independence.
