June 29 | Who Heard It? 🧵 If you heard the May 18 eruption, OMSI curator Clara Fairfield wants to know. A "sound map" Fairfield is compiling shows that no sound was heard around Mount St. Helens, but people near Puget Sound, the Oregon coastline, and north of Eugene heard something around 8:32 AM.

So, why did people in British Columbia and Oregon hear it but not those near Mount St. Helens? Well, physics. Sound waves from St. Helens reacted to temperature and air motion in the atmosphere and local topography nearby, causing a 60-mile "zone of silence" around the mountain on May 18th.
