Oh and those nitrate fires? Safety film existed in the 1910s but studios didn’t want to pay that extra few cents a foot.

They did this knowing fires were a constant danger to the public. They have a lot of deaths on their hands.

So, yeah, when studios celebrate their centenaries and brag about their proud heritage and preservation efforts… Universal had to go begging to archives for its own films. They junked all their silents in a series of purges over the course of two decades. Proud heritage? Preservation?
