Most beloved vintage things experience a time in the wilderness and that is when they are most vulnerable. When I was a tween, Queen and The Bee Gees were just not the thing you listened to if you wanted to be cool. Keanu Reeves was a punchline. And Theda Bara’s movies rotted due to being uncool.

“Cringe” content, after it has been thoroughly mocked, just gets shuffled away and forgotten. A lot of it never returns and, worse, a lot of it is never missed. The majority of all silent films are lost and several notable exceptions survive because one person remembered in time.
