Fwiw I don't think that's what was going on. The reason you can hear so much of the room is that they had to boost Biden's mic a lot in order to hear him. He's whispering.

Which is consistent with the "Biden has a cold" story and the way he's sounded at the debate and since. He's hoarse and having difficulty getting words out and the audio engineer was boosting his mic's level to compensate.
