Thoughts the AI covers discourse: I think publishers should consider doing development collages of cover WiPs. Admittedly, I do commission work on an individual scale, not big press, but I usually have a dozen update shots I sent a client for feedback and direction. But it can't be that different.

Having that opportunity to let people see what went into something and why you made the artistic choices you did and how you executed it? Most artists would jump on that. And it might go a ways to reminding people that artists aren't machines, and covers are more than /just/ marketing product.

It can be mostly a marketing thing, giving people a behind the scenes look at the development of a cover. People like that. Also, (and this is a generalization), but I want to say most artists would be happy to share that snapshot into their process. Art is usually seen only as the final product.
