It occurs to me that some of this must be about what it takes to “see the world” from the UK vs the US. 63% of US citizens don’t have a valid passport. Whereas UK kids are going off on French exchange aged 14. Actually “Earth kids on Gliese 17 exchange” isn’t a bad premise for a space travel story.

I (British, living in London) was chatting to an American I met recently who has just moved to the UK but has toured widely (not just the US, but also the UK, Europe and beyond) with quite a successful band, and he asked me quite innocently, "have you visited mainland Europe?"
