The data mining is so obvious when you consider there isn't anything there app does that a web page could not do. In fact, they can do lots of data harvesting with a web page. I don't understand what more they can get from an app, but it must be something to make it worth the effort. 1/2

I mean, instead of writing one web page that would work on a PC, Mac, iPhone, or Android they write an app for the iPhone and an app for Android. It's more effort, so in what way is it worth it to them? The answer can only be data mining. 2/2
