The eve of Independence Day also marks the anniversary of the Union victory at #Gettysburg in 1863. So let’s sing together “The Flag of Union,” which was published multiple times in The Weekly Standard in Raleigh, NC, in the winter and spring of 1861. It is sung to the tune Dixie’s Land.

The words refer to “the storm cloud” and “preachers of strife and hate and scorn.” The chorus goes like this: Shall traitors dim its glory! never! never! A gallant band around it stand to live and die for the Union. Hurrah, hurrah, hurrah for the flag of Union!
