Barbara Walter wrote a compelling book called "How Civil Wars Start - and how to stop them"
It isn't short - here is an hour long podcast from this year. She makes the argument that civil war is much closer than most people think (hope).

I know, I'm an academic, reading a book isn't a magic solution (unless the question is dinner and the book is a cookbook). But I think truly understanding where we are, what situations have been analogous, and how we personally are going to navigate the next little while - that's important.
