Gambling is causing an occupational health and safety crisis for athletic workers and the leagues they work for and sports media complex are entirely responsible because, as always, in capitalism value comes first and the worker might as well be dead at the end of the day.

In addition to no longer regulating gambling, we seem to have forgotten why we used to regulate gambling in the first place.

Threats are never OK. Ever. That said, if you can't bet on it people don't watch it. Pro athletes' salaries have far outpaced inflation last 30 years. Habs won Stanley Cup 1993. Team salary $10.75MM Current NHL team cap: $83MM Ban gambling on college? OK Ban it in the pros? OK, big pay cuts.

Why, as a society, have we allowed death threats to be normalised? It's a major issue now for anyone with a public persona.

Also, people are literally asking players to Venmo them the money they lost on bets.

One of the things I loved about the US vs Ireland was no sports gambling; hated seeing betting shops and knowing what it was like ever since I was little. Astonishing how the US is just diving in head first after years of seemingly no gambling on sports at all.

Can't stop the gambling addicts, but widespread legalization of sports betting doesn't seem to have had any positive societal effect.

The fact that intermission shows and play by play guys are constantly talking about the odds is ridiculous.

In capitalism, and things that existed to bring happiness will be used to bring sorrow, suffering, and ruin. Capitalism destroys all joy and hope in the name of money and profit. There exists nothing more important to capitalists than growing wealth at any expense.

I wonder if there's any correlation between unhinged fan/betting behavior and political affiliation??

I think that gambling in sports is terrible, but one step in the right direction would be for it to be legally limited to moneylines. You can only bet if a team wins or loses. No spreads, no props

The way we went from zero to “fuck it we can gamble on everything” remains truly disturbing. We were not built for this

So many comments to make about this situation, but whoops, too many potentially actionable threats to hit reply!
