That makes sense the officer class was not trained by a training programme was that right? Learn on the job and hope not to die?

Effectively, but the training started at about age 12 so if you made it to adulthood and were halfway able the chances are you'd know your stuff pretty well by the time a command came along. But individual commanders like Broke and Hope of the Endymion really stepped up the modern thinking
