Multiple federal and state government agencies count the number of deaths from extreme floods, wildfires, heat waves and hurricanes. They don't always agree on which deaths should be counted.

It’s great to have stories fiddling around the least important edges of existential problems. How do we count the deaths? This many? Maybe a few less? Great work everyone. Problem solved.

I cringe every time I see the "count." Because supposedly the only thing that "counts" is how many people died. But what about the people whose personal wealth has been wiped out or who suffer life-changing injuries or losses. Aren't they as important? Or in some ways more so?
