If you see Trump as an anomaly, it seems unjust to blame liberals for any of it. If you realize that Trump grew naturally out of very fertile soil, lovingly tended by both increasingly virulent conservatism and by the rise of neoliberalism, you blame everyone. EVERYTHING brought us here.

People, mostly white liberals, really want to believe that Trump is an anomaly because to do otherwise would be to put the lie to everything they believe. The amount of "this isn't who we are" pearlclutching in 2016 by white liberals sure was something.
