Germany really catches you off guard because it can go from idyllic to terrifying in the space of an afternoon. There aren’t many other places like that.

Totally agree. I went from getting looked at like a terrorist for wearing a kefiyeh (last summer!) to being bought drinks in a bar talking about football in the same small town. Love the place dearly, but it is schizophrenic in the extreme.
